3.5 Stars – Sabotaged Christmas is billed as a Romantic Mystery and that fits the bill. Toni DeLuca is a single, attractive Christian woman who owns DeLuca Construction after the death of her father. She is an intelligent, competent employer who cares deeply about her employees and the business. Recently, she has begun dealing with sabotage at her worksites and mysterious pink notes threatening her, her business and questioning the honesty and integrity of her father. Perrin Douglas, a widowed father, has recently moved to Appleton, West Virginia, and hired Toni to put an addition on his older home. He is a reclusive writer who has been hurt badly by his previous wife. Toni and Perrin begin to develop a friendship that takes one step forward and two steps back on a regular basis. This causes Toni to question who he really is; is he the person behind the sabotage? Perrin’s son, Blake, really likes Toni and is constantly trying to get them together, something Toni wouldn’t mind, since she’s falling for him. As the accidents become more serious with one of Toni’s employee’s getting injured and she herself being attacked, can she find who is behind the trouble and more importantly, why?

Brown gives readers a Christian romantic suspense novel concentrating on the feelings and thoughts of the characters. The budding romance of Toni and Perrin progresses slowly with plenty of obstacles in the way. The plot was simple, yet I wasn’t completely sure I had it figured out until almost the end of the story. The one thing that bothered me was that things were abrupt at times. A chapter would end with something happening, and you would expect the next chapter or so to continue with that storyline but nothing. Even within a chapter, I found this happening. Sometimes that thread never came up again, other times it was much later in the story where it was even mentioned again. The motives behind the sabotaging of Toni’s business are quite complex. All is revealed in the end but it felt a bit unfinished to me. I did appreciate Toni’s strong Christian faith, and the fact that Perrin begins to understand it and agreed to go to church and see if this was something he wanted to become involved in. Overall, this was a quick mystery with a good Christian message. There are four books in the  “An Appleton, WV Romantic Mystery” series and I will try another one to see where the author goes with this series.

Praise for Sabotaged Christmas

In Sabotaged Christmas, Carole Brown weaves an enticing web of intrigue, romance and faith guaranteed to keep you reading until the very last page. Though set in the dead of winter, this book is sizzling with action, mystery and down-to-earth characters that will keep your imagination spinning and the questions flowing. With its focus on family and the idea of building new relationships, this book is a great example of “love conquers all.”

Sabotaged Christmas involves sabotage on the work site, romance, and dysfunctional families … how could that combination result in a warm, fuzzy Christmas ending?

Characters I loved and wanted to have their dreams come true. Others, I wanted to keep my distance from and hoped they would get their just deserts. Plot twists I didn’t see coming kept me reading past bedtime! I especially liked the ending with all the threads tied together! Well done, Carole.
