Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. This week’s prompt is Top Ten Opening Lines. I do not have any idea or memory of opening lines except for Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. Instead, after reading Carol’s list at The Reading Ladies, I went with Favourite Book Quotes, specifically Favourite Children’s Book Quotes. I had a real hard time limiting this to ten, but here is what I ended up with.
“Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”
—Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
“A little consideration, a little thought for others, makes all the difference.”
— Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne
“A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”
—The Twits by Roald Dahl
“Listen to the MUSTN’TS, child, Listen to the DON’TS Listen to the SHOULDN’TS The IMPOSSIBLES, the WONT’S Listen to the NEVER HAVES Then listen close to me— Anything can happen, child, ANYTHING can be.”
—Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…”
― Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss
“We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.”
— Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling
“‘Why did you do all this for me?’ he asked. ‘I don’t deserve it. I’ve never done anything for you.’ ‘You have been my friend,’ replied Charlotte. ‘That in itself is a tremendous thing.’”
— Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White
If we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives.
– The Ersatz Elevator by Lemony Snicket
“In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart.”
– Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl By Anne Frank
“UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
– The Lorax, Dr. Seuss
And One Bonus one, because I couldn’t whittle it down anymore.
“You must never feel badly about making mistakes … as long as you take the trouble to learn from them. For you often learn more by being wrong for the right reasons than you do by being right for the wrong reasons.”
—The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

These are great and bring back memories. I adored the Anne of Green Gables series as a child.

Thanks Dedra. There were a lot of good ones in that book. She was a very honest, forgiving and insightful young girl.

Great twist on this topic! These are all wonderful quotes and, funny enough, some of the books they come from do not have awesome opening lines. Just goes to prove you can’t judge a book by its opener!
Happy TTT!

What a fantastic idea! I was convinced that the Anne of Green Gables quote was going to be my favorite, but then you shared the Charlotte’s Web quote, and that one is pretty special, too.
Thanks so much for sharing! I loved these!

Reblogged this on education pathways and commented:
Blogging friend, retired teacher/librarian, and book reviewer Carla has chosen out some of her favorite quotes from children’s books to share. I love them all. There is such wisdom in children’s literature. I challenge all education administrators to apply the quote from The Phantom Tollbooth in all of their dealings teachers and students. We do, in fact, learn from our mistakes!

Fabulous list, Carla! I love all of them, but especially the first one. Now I’m really curious about which ones were in your original twenty. Today’s TTT could have been Top Twenty or even more.

Thanks Toni. There was another Harry Potter from a different book, another Anne, another Dr. Seuss, another A.A. Milne so those were the first to get chopped. I had a few other picture books as well, but that will be for another day.
