Welcome to my stop on the Blog Tour for Kaye Lynne Booth’s Poetry book: Small Wonders, Reflective Poems. Scroll down for a guest post, a reading of one of her poems, a giveaway and my review.
About the Book: The world is filled with amazing things, if we will just stop a moment and take notice. In this vast universe, we are but tiny individuals, filled with awe and amazement. From reflections on first love, to reflections on growing old. The poems within these pages express a lifetime of unique reflections in Small Wonders.
“Whether chasing moles in the garden or fantasizing about the life of a cat, Kaye Booth’s poems find playfulness, humor, levity, and often beauty. Small Wonders is a delightful compendium of poetic forms—from pantoums to Shadormas. Each poem is an invitation to see the world with new eyes.”—Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer, author of All the Honey and Hush
Someone to Look Up To – Guest Post
Everyone should have someone to look up to in their field, someone who they can use as an example and try and measure up to them. These folks are generally called mentor. I found my friend and mentor in poetry back in 2010, when I was covering a poetry performance in Salida, Colorado as the Southern Colorado Literature Examiner. One of the performance poets that night, was a vibrant woman, who spoke her poetry with energy and feeling, who made you feel the words. Maybe that is why folks had dubbed her with the moniker of Word Woman. A title well deserved.
That evening, watching Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer perform was amazing. It touched me as nothing else I’d ever witnessed had. Her words lilted and flowed, as effortlessly as her body lilted and flowed across the stage. Some of my photos captured her in motion, but they couldn’t capture the grace of her delivery. I felt immediately that I was in the presence of greatness.
Since that night, a friendship has formed between Rosemerry and I. I have admired her for all these years, as she is a very special person. I admire her ability to write a poem a day, her creativeness in writing poems on rocks and leaving them around her community for others to find and enjoy, her vibrancy, her energy, and her love for both written and spoken words. She has inspired me in many ways, and thoughts of her always bring a smile to my face. She’s been my go-to person for all things poetry. I’ve interviewed her for Writing to be Read, she has participated in WordCrafter virtual writing events, and she was a guest on Robbie Cheadle’s “Treasuring Poetry” blog series last year and her works are included in Treasuring Poetry 3: Passions.
So, it pleased me to no end when she agreed to read my poems in Small Wonders and write a recommendation for the back cover. Although I was honored, I was also a bit nervous about it. I didn’t know what this woman, who lives and breathes poetry, writing a poem every day to share on her blog, would think about my meager attempts at poetry. I was fully prepared for her to tell me that my poetry was childish, as one of the nurses at the long-term care facility I worked at long ago had. I was prepared for her to tell me that I wasn’t ready to publish, my poetry wasn’t good enough, that I should stick to fiction. But, to my relief, she didn’t say any of those things. Instead, she wrote me a lovely blurb for the back of my book, and I am so proud to place it there. And I am proud to call such a wonderful poet as Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer my friend. 😊
“To Be A Cat”
At yesterday’s stop, I spoke about my love of language and how I like to have fun with my poetry. I’d like to share another fun poem with you today from the Small Wonders collection, “To Be A Cat”.
Poetry Reading – “To Be A Cat”
Small Wonders is a collection of poems from nature, to life, love, aging, religious beliefs, relationships, and mental health. There is a poem in here that every person will be able to relate to. I like the easy, honest, straight forward style, that each piece is written in. I have come to once again enjoy poetry after reading several recent collections and this is one that has several poems that I can identify with and that touch my heart. I laughed, I cried, and I had many thoughtful moments. One that really had me laughing was A Mole in the Garden with it’s unexpected stanzas about the various attempts to get rid of that mole. I loved the last line: “I’d better plant enough for me AND the mole next year.” Of course getting older I really identified with “There Was a Time…” as well as laughing at the various descriptions of aging. One that touched my heart and had me tearing up was “No Place to Go But Home” which I related to as losing a spouse, but could be a divorce, empty nesting etc. I could go on and on, but I recommend you pick this book up. It is one that I know I will pick up and read a selection here and there depending on my mood. I also liked that there are a few descriptions of poetry styles that gave me a bit of insight into the poems structure, that are scattered within this volume. If you enjoy poetry or are just giving it a try to see if it is something you would enjoy, I recommend Small Wonders, I am sure you will enjoy it.

I have not heard of the styles of poems that you mentioned, but I have found that you don’t have to be a poetry expert to enjoy poems. In fact, maybe it’s better if your approach is simply enjoyment anyway. Thanks, Carla, for sharing this author and her passion for poetry. Great review.

I have to agree. For me anyway, I write poetry because it is fun and enjoyable. I love to play with words. The Day 1 post for this tour, was all about having fun with poetry. When I got my degree, I didn’t go for poetry because all the folks in that concentration were way too serious, and I just wanted to have fun with it. I don’t see the schedule in Calra’s post, but if you are interested some of the other stops have examples of haiga, tanka, limerick, acrostic, and minimalist. It’s all self taught, but I love to share. Thaks for your comment. 🙂

I loved your reading of the poem, “To Be a Cat.” Now that I think of it, the cats in my family when I was growing up were inside cats and didn’t have many opportunities to chase mice. All they did was lie around and be petted and sometimes play or fight with each other. You could be that kind of cat.

Thanks, Robbie. I think that’s one of the great things about poetry, it speaks differently to different readers.

I have only started in the last year or so. I don’t read a lot, but enjoy it once in a while, especially if it causes me to reflect. Thanks, Yesha.
