This meme was started by Rae Longest at Powerful Women Readers. As I am a grandmother, who loves to read to her grandchildren, a mother who loved to read to and with her children, and a retired teacher librarian, this meme really attracted me.

My grandkids spent a night this week at my place, so we hunkered down with these two books. Both of these books were provided to me from the publishers upon request, through Netgalley. I have included their comments, reactions and interactions where appropriate. All ratings and opinions are our own. I might be a bit biased, as these books brought back some great memories of my own children’s childhood and time we spent together, but I really enjoyed reading them with my grandkids.

5 Stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My children grew up watching The Elephant Show on TV starring Sharon, Lois and Bram. We sang all the songs and did the actions. When I saw that this book was based on one of our favourite songs, I jumped at the chance to read and sing with my grandchildren. It is wonderful, and although some additional verses have been added to the songs we sang when they were young, it brought back great memories. Qin Leng illustrated this book and did a great job adding children, animals and adults singing and celebrating as they parade through town. My two youngest grandchildren loved it and quickly started singing the chorus with me and we finally got the oldest to begrudgingly join in. It is available as a hardcover book and a boardbook, so would be a great gift for a baby.

Sharon, Lois and Bram’s One Elephant Went Out to Play by Sharon Hampson, Lois Lillienstein, Bram Morrison, Randi Hampson, Qin Leng (Illustrator)

One Elephant Went Out to Play is another song that my children and I used to sing together when they were young and we were huge fans of the Elephant Show starring Sharon, Lois and Bram. This book was written by Sharon’s daughter, Randi Hampson and it changed it a bit adding a variety of jungle animals and children from different ethnicities and abilities. It is also a counting song, but they do add five monkeys in one fell swoop. Once the Smiley Snake arrives and there are ten animals, everyone is invited in to party. How strong is the spider web they are playing on? Will all of these animals and children cause the web to collapse? Read this book to find out. My grandkids enjoyed this book and especially loved the illustrations by Qin Leng. I tried to get them to sing with me, but the words didn’t have the same repetition as Skinnamarink, so was not as easy, but with a couple more rereads, they will get it. We did enjoy this story and I was happy to bring something from their Dad’s history to them so we could all enjoy it together. I know we will enjoy this book again.
