I reviewed this book back in 2020 when it was titled, When Adam Met Evie. It was recently given an updated cover and it has been shortlisted for the Romance Writers’ of America VIVIAN award (First Best Book category)! Please check out my review below as I really enjoyed this one.
Her Outback Driver by Giulia Skye
Published February 7th 2020
Genre: Contemporary romance (light/romcom)
Standalone First Book in the Take A Holiday Series
About the Book: Escape with this heart-warming, feel-good romance. A Romance Writers of America, Vivian Contest Finalist!
When former Olympic champion, Michael Adams—now Canada’s hottest reality TV star—insults his fake showbiz wife on social media, he jumps on the first flight to Australia to escape the ensuing scandal. Desperate to experience ordinary life again—if only for a few weeks—he becomes “Adam”; just another tourist exploring the dusty Outback trails in a beat up truck. But with a reward out for his safe return and his fame’s nasty habit of catching up with him when he least expects, Adam needs a better disguise… and he’s just found one.
Tired of lies and liars, British Backpacker Evie Blake is taking a year out of her busy London life, looking for adventure to heal her broken heart. So when the hot Canadian she meets at the campground offers to drive her through Western Australia’s wild Kimberley region, she grabs the chance, unaware he has the world out looking for him. He’s just a down-on-his-luck traveler, right?
But when hot days turn into even hotter nights, how long does Adam have before Evie discovers who he really is?
Australia is on my bucket list, but I don’t think I will take in the same sites that Adam aka Michael Adams and Evie took in. I loved the descriptions of what they saw and where they went, delighting this armchair tourist. Of course the trip together was made all the more pleasant by their budding romance.
I really liked Evie. She is dealing with a relationship of 15 years ending within the last year and is alone, planning on seeing the Australian Outback. She was raised by a single mom, who instilled the need to be strong and independent. When she was a teen, she found out that her father, a man who abandoned her and her mother when she was young, had another family. Needless to day, she has a trust issue. When she stumbles upon Adam, naked in the showers she is cleaning, she is immediately attracted to his physical presence. When they end up trekking together in a borrowed truck, alone, they both give in to those feeling and begin a physical relationship. The more time they spend together, the more they begin to care about one another. Evie is a very emotional, loving and caring person. Adam, on the other hand, is a coward. Hiding out in the Outback from his previous life, his wife, his agent, his father and his fans, he lies over and over again to Evie. Even with all that, as the story progressed, I began to like him more.
The story is a meandering tale that takes us on the trip with Adam and Evie. I enjoyed learning about the setting, the people they met, the things they did, but it did slow the story down at times. This story is well-written with well-developed characters and held my interest. I was happy with the way this story ended up and as it ended, I finally liked Michael as much as I liked Adam. This is a debut book for Giulia Skye and it is an enjoyable start to this new series. I received a copy of this book from the author upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

About the Author: Italian-born Giulia Skye spent her childhood watching classic Hollywood films and thinking up her own romantic stories. After two decades working in TV production, she knew turning those stories into novels would be much more enjoyable – and far cheaper – than turning them into films. She still keeps her hand in TV production but is at her happiest being a stay-at-home mum, spending time with her family, growing her own vegetables and conjuring up sizzling stories about sexy heroes meeting feisty heroines who aren’t always as they at first appear. When Adam Met Evie is her first novel, Book 1 of her “Take a Holiday” series.

Australia is one of my favorite settings for books, probably because I will never get there in real life.

I have no idea why whenever I see a book has had it’s title changed I pretty much always think I would be more interested in the first title. What does that say about my tastes??😂🤣😇😋

Lovely review Carla. I also would love to travel to Australia, but I think reading books is the only way I’ll get there!

My husband “had” to go to Australia on business and toured parts on a motorcycle while he was there. He loved it; I wish I had been able to go too. Maybe some day. Meanwhile, books like this make a good substitute! Thanks for sharing.

Even if I get to Australia one day, I won’t be going where they went in the story, so I am glad it was so well described. Your husband is lucky to have had that experience. My daughter went a few years ago with a friend, did the hostel thing etc. She loved it as well.

Yes, eventually. I loved the descriptions of the off roading locations, but I won’t be doing that. 😮
