5 Stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I read this book back when it first came out, but was offered a chance to listen to the audiobook and I jumped at it. First I want to say that it is best to read or listen to this series in order. Each book builds on the one before it, so it you read this one, there will be spoilers for the previous books. Will Trent is undercover for the GBI as ex-con Bill Black, working at a hospital in Macon, Georgia. They are trying to take down “Big Whitey” a drug and crime kingpin. Lena Adams is a detective for the Macon County Police and is leading the investigation on “Big Whitey” for the department. When a raid goes bad and their main lead kills himself, Lena is back to the drawing board, that is until someone breaks into their home and shoots her husband, Jared, and tries to kill her as well. Well, Lena is able to save herself and the investigation into “Big Whitey” goes full speed ahead.
This story opens with a bang with the shooting and doesn’t stop until the end. It is narrated from both Lena’s and Will’s POV. Throw in the strain between Will and Sara, as well as Sara and Lena that has developed through previous books. The suspense of trying to figure out who “Big Whitey” is or if he even exists is woven throughout the story. There is some trafficking issues in this book that may cause some discomfort, but it is alluded to, not described. This was an intense story, with great characters, a quickly moving plot, some evil, and some heartbreaking scenes. I think this was one of the best in the Will Trent series to date that I have read. Kathleen Early narrated this story and did an amazing job with it. She used her expression and intonation to draw me into the story, so that I could not stop listening. A wonderful performance for an excellent story. I was gifted a copy of this audiobook upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.
About the Book: Detectives, lovers, and enemies are pitted against one another in an unforgettable standoff between righteous courage and deepest evil from New York Times best-selling author Karin Slaughter.
Will Trent is a Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent whose latest case has him posing as Bill Black, a scary ex-con who rides a motorcycle around Macon, Georgia, and trails an air of violence wherever he goes. The cover has worked, and he has caught the eye of a wiry little drug dealer who thinks he might be a useful ally. But undercover and cut off from the support of the woman he loves, Sara Linton, Will finds his demons catching up with him.
Although she has no idea where Will has gone, or why, Sara herself has come to Macon because of a cop shooting; her stepson, Jared, has been gunned down in his own home. Sara holds Lena, Jared’s wife, responsible. Lena, a detective, has been a magnet for trouble all her life, and Jared’s shooting is not the first time someone Sara loved got caught in the crossfire. Furious, Sara finds herself involved in the same case that Will is working without even knowing it, and soon danger is swirling around both of them.
In a novel of fierce intensity, shifting allegiances, and shocking twists, two investigations collide with a conspiracy straddling both sides of the law. Unseen is both an electrifying thriller and a piercing study of human nature: what happens when good people face the unseen evils in their lives.
