Welcome to my stop on the Blog Tour for Rose’s Choice by Chrissie Bradshaw. I have read many stories set during WWII, but I have not yet read one centered around the coal miners during and after the war. This was a very enjoyable story and I want to thank Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for my invitation to read and review this book for this book tour.

About the Book: Rose’s Choice – a heart-wrenching wartime saga of love, family and secrets
Rationing, bombing, disease and pit disasters are part of Rose Kelly’s World War 2 childhood. When the spirited coalminer’s daughter discovers a family secret, she makes a choice that overshadows her teenage years. Rose tries to make the most of post-war opportunities but family tragedy pulls her back to a life in the colliery rows. She relinquishes her bright future for domestic duties because her family comes first. Will family ties get in the way of her dreams?
Rose’s Choice is the first book in a new saga series by Chrissie Bradshaw called The Colliery Rows. Rose was the first child of local pitman John Kelly and his wife Ginnie. Rose was a beautiful child loved by all. She was smart, curious and loved animals, although her mother would not allow an animal in the house. Eventually twins joined the family and although Ginnie would love Rose to take on some of the family chores and learn how to keep house, Rose was not interested. She wanted to get a job, and work outside the home. Getting a scholarship to a girl’s school, she continues her education. As the war drags on, the family lived with rationing, both food and clothes. They learned to ment, remake and deal with hand me downs. When a diptheria outbreak occurs, the family has to deal with children getting sick and hospitalized. Several children in the village succumb to the disease. Eventually Ginnie gets pregnant again and has another son, Terrance. As life goes on, Rose stumbles onto a secret, that could tear her family apart. Rose has many decisions to make during this story that will affect not only her life, but those she loves. What will she choose to do?
Rose is kind, caring, compassionate, helpful, friendly, strong, loyal and stubborn, She knows what she wants and she goes after it. She has so much happen to her when she is still young, but she faces the problems with courage and perseverance. I loved the family chemistry throughout the story. Even when there are issues, you can feel the love. The secondary characters are also well developed and add much to the story, especially when showing us Rose’s character. The story is set in the North East of England in a coal mining community. I learned some about the industry and the people who worked in the mines, but will be doing some more reading as this has piqued my interest. Chrissie Bradshaw has written a wartime saga filled with emotion. There were times that had a few tears, and others where I was shouting, yay! This is a coming of age story in a sad time, a story of war, survival, family trials and tribulations, forgiveness, second chances, friendship and love. I was sorry to say good-bye to Rose when the book ended, but I hope she will show up in the future books in this series. If you enjoy historical fiction, especially dealing with families, then I recommend you pick this one up. I received a copy of this book through Rachel’s Random Resources upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
