Memories and Murder (Tourist Trap Mysteries #10) by Lynn Cahoon

Cozy Mystery

About the Book: It’s October in South Cove, California, and the locals in the quaint resort seem to be happily pairing off in the lull before the holidays. Everyone, that is, except for Jill Gardner’s elderly aunt, who just dumped her besotted fiancé—and she won’t say why.

When Jill hosts a talk at Coffee, Books, and More on the topic of elder abuse, all that’s really on her mind is lunch. But the topic hits close to home when she discovers Aunt Jackie has been getting mysterious calls. Jill’s certain the caller is a con artist, of course, but her feisty aunt claims to understand this, though she’s still shaken—and Harrold’s still heartbroken. Who’s behind the scam and why was her aunt targeted? When a volunteer from the Senior Project is found murdered, Jill’s detective boyfriend is on the case—and it soon becomes clear no one is safe when a caller from beyond becomes a killer in their midst.

5 Stars:

Those of you who follow my blog know that I am a big Lynn Cahoon fan. I read all of her various series and enjoy them all. I really enjoyed this outing of The Tourist Trap Mysteries. This is the tenth full length story with several novellas along the way, and it is still going strong. When Aunt Jackie calls off her engagement to Harrold and starts acting out of character, Jill Gardner has to ramp up her investigating. She is on the trail of a mysterious caller who is targeting her Aunt Jackie. He is playing on her love for her deceased husband, but claiming he is Ted, and that he is not dead, but in witness protection. There is also a dead body that Greg is investigating, but it doesn’t take long to determine that these two things are somehow connected. Can Jill figure out what is going on in time to salvage Jackie’s and Harrold’s engagement?

I enjoy this series for so many reasons. Lynn Cahoon has a wonderful writing style, great well-developed main characters and strong secondary characters, and a great setting with both the town of South Cove, California and the coffee shop/bookstore, Coffee Books and More. The plot is well written with the reader feeling like they are right there solving the mystery with Jill and Greg. I like the romance between Jill and Greg as well. They are a great couple who have a lot in common and really support one another. Greg is the lead detective in town, yet understands Jill’s desire to help others. Although he does not share information with her per se, he does not block her or intimidate her while she is sleuthing. This book is fast-paced, with a lot happening. Several storylines come together as the crime is investigated and it becomes obvious that both of the major crimes in this story are related. I did figure out some of what was happening before the final reveal, but the major culprit was not obvious to me until the author basically gave up a huge clue. The showdown was exciting and I was thrilled at the ending of this story. Once again, Lynn Cahoon has penned a wonderful story that I recommend to all cozy mystery lovers.

I did a read/listen for this book. Susan Boyce has narrated many books that I have listened to over the last couple of years and she is one that I enjoy. She has good expression and intonation when reading. I am able to distinguish characters based on the voice she uses, even though they are not radically different. A narrator that I know what to expect and always enjoy. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
