The Exes’ Revenge by Jo Jakeman
Published September 11th 2018 by Berkley Books
Phillip Rochester is a police officer who treats the women in his life terribly. He has an ex-wife, an estranged wife and is engaged to another woman. Imogen is #2 and is the mother of his son, Alistair. They are living in the family home and Phillip wants them out. When he goes to the house to inform Imogen she has until the end of the month to get out, he attacks her. She protects herself and what happens next sets off a host of events that finds the three women standing up together.
The story begins with the day of Phillip’s funeral, then goes back 22 days. We learn what happens in those 22 days leading up to Phillip’s death. Phillip is truly a despicable man. He is abusive, controlling, and unfaithful. He finds women who are alone, with no family and exploits this. He is charming at first, but when he is tired of someone, he is thoughtless in tossing them aside. Imogen, Naomi and Ruby were women who did not like one another nor trust one another, until they have a common goal. At first I thought this would be a simple ex-wives take revenge story, but it was so much more. We learn about the relationships between Phillip and the women, what happens, and how he treats them. Then we learn about how it affects them and why the react like they did. I was not prepared for some of the information shared and it could be emotional at times. It was not overly graphic when discussing abuse, but it was there. Even after the break up of relationships, Phillip still tends to be in the driver’s seat, until he’s not. Most of the story is told from Imogen’s point of view, though there are a few chapters told from other characters’ perspectives.
I enjoyed this story. The characters were interesting and well-developed. I hated Phillip, of course, that was the author’s intent. I read this story in just over a day, wanting to find out exactly what happened to Phillip. There were times where I had to suspend belief (it is fiction after all) where some things were a bit over the top, but nothing major. Overall, I enjoyed this thriller, suspense, betrayal, revenge story. It was engrossing and a very good debut novel for Jo Jakeman. I am looking forward to seeing what she follows this book up with.
About the Book: A wickedly dark debut thriller about three women who’ve all been involved with the same man and realize the one thing they have in common is that they all want revenge against him…
Divorces are often messy, and Imogen’s is no exception. Phillip Rochester is controlling, abusive, and determined to make things as difficult as possible. When he shows up without warning demanding that Imogen move out of their house by the end of the month or he’ll sue for sole custody of their young son, Imogen is ready to snap.
In a moment of madness, Imogen does something unthinkable–something that puts her in control for the first time in years. She’s desperate to protect her son and to claim authority over her own life.
But she wasn’t expecting both Phillip’s ex-wife and new girlfriend to get tangled up in her plans. These three very different women–and unlikely allies–reluctantly team up to take revenge against a man who has wronged them all.
