My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren
I can’t believe it took me this long to read a book by Christina Lauren. I loved this quirky, humorous romance. Millie Morris is a university professor whose best friends also happen be professors and all male. They are all a bit relationship challenged and tend to just hang out together. One evening, they all decide to bring a plus one to an upcoming event at the university. Millie helps them write profiles for a dating site as well as her own. At the same time, during an evening where they are drinking, Millie and Reid end up spending a night together and both realize they have feelings for one another. Of course, they laugh it off as just sex and do not tell the other how they really feel. As their search for dates continues, Millie and Reid become closer.
I love the characters in this book. The relationship of the group is fun and a reminds me a bit of the gang on Big Bang Theory. Millie is attractive, funny, sarcastic yet private about her personal life and things that really matter. Reid is open, willing to share and have fun. He is also a bit shy, so is afraid to tell Millie what he is really feeling about her. The story was funny, yet endearing. I wanted to shake Reid and Millie a couple of times wanting them to share what they were feeling with one another. There were times my heart broke for them and others where I was smiling, cheering them on. This is a romantic story that although maddening at times, it seemed real. The character’s experiences with online dating had me laughing out loud and thanking my lucky stars that I will not be experiencing that first hand. This romantic comedy was well-written, with snarky, sarcastic humour that will keep readers/listeners happily and quickly devouring this book to see what is going to happen with Millie and Reid. I listened to this book and loved both narrators. They gave wonderful voices to Millie and Reid, which made them very real to me. This was another book that I listened to in a day as I immersed myself into the lives and loves of this quirky crew. I definitely recommend this story to anyone, even if you don’t think you enjoy romantic comedy.
About the Book: By the New York Times bestselling author who “hilariously depicts modern dating” (Us Weekly), My Favorite Half-Night Stand is a laugh-out-loud romp through online dating and its many, many fails.
Millie Morris has always been one of the guys. A UC Santa Barbara professor, she’s a female-serial-killer expert who’s quick with a deflection joke and terrible at getting personal. And she, just like her four best guy friends and fellow professors, is perma-single.
So when a routine university function turns into a black tie gala, Mille and her circle make a pact that they’ll join an online dating service to find plus-ones for the event. There’s only one hitch: after making the pact, Millie and one of the guys, Reid Campbell, secretly spend the sexiest half-night of their lives together, but mutually decide the friendship would be better off strictly platonic.
But online dating isn’t for the faint of heart. While the guys are inundated with quality matches and potential dates, Millie’s first profile attempt garners nothing but dick pics and creepers. Enter “Catherine”—Millie’s fictional profile persona, in whose make-believe shoes she can be more vulnerable than she’s ever been in person. Soon “Catherine” and Reid strike up a digital pen-pal-ship…but Millie can’t resist temptation in real life, either. Soon, Millie will have to face her worst fear—intimacy—or risk losing her best friend, forever.
Perfect for fans of Roxanne and She’s the Man, Christina Lauren’s latest romantic comedy is full of mistaken identities, hijinks, and a classic love story with a modern twist. Funny and fresh, you’ll want to swipe right on My Favorite Half-Night Stand.
