For years, I tried to listen to audiobooks but couldn’t concentrate on the book, my mind was always going a mile a minute. Last year, I tried again and eureka, success. Perhaps it is because I am retired and no longer have so many things to stress about. Perhaps it is that I am not a huge television watcher, I would rather read or listen to a book. Perhaps it is that I enjoy listening to a story while doing mundane chores and jobs. Whatever it is, I absolutely love listening to audiobooks.
I know that audiobooks are not cheap. Being on a fixed income, I have to watch my pennies, so here are some great ways to listen to audiobooks without having to spend money.
My two local libraries (City and County) have hundreds of audiobooks on Overdrive. As along as you are a member of the library, you can check them out.
Hoopla is another place affiliated with libraries, but they have different books from Overdrive. Again, all you need is to belong to a library that subscribes to Hoople. The interesting thing is that the two libraries I use do not have the same books available. They also limit the amount of books you can borrow in a month so with two libraries available, it doubles what I can check out.
This is the one place I have to pay a fee. I purchased a year’s subscription at a reduced rate when I discovered the read and listen option. Not all books that are in the KU program have the listen option, but many do and I love this opportunity to read and listen at the same time.
So, there you have it. Three cheap ways to access and listen to audiobooks. If you read an audiobook this month, tag it with the #JIAM. Happy Listening.

I’m glad you re-discovered and now love Audiobooks! I can’t just sit and listen to them, but if I am doing something with my hands (coloring, cleaning, driving, etc) I love listening to Audiobooks 😀
Another app that is free and connects to your library is Libby! That is the one I use. I don’t know if it has different books than Overdrive or Hoopla, but it could be worth looking into?

Actually, my library now used Libby instead of Overdrive and the city library I use now uses something called Icloud. That is just in the last week or so they switched over. I don’t just sit and listen it is when I am doing things as well, like cleaning, weeding, dishes etc.

I love audiobooks. I usually get CDs from the library or use Hoopla or Overdrive. Probably half the books I ‘read’ are audiobooks. 😊🍀💕

And if you do blog tours with an audiobook organiser too. I love finding the audio included on my KU books! I’m currently listening to A Murmur of Bees. Will have to remember the #JIAM take when posting that review 😉

Audiobookworms | She’s pretty good. Haven’t done any recently but she has several tours running plus audiobooks to ‘adopt’.

Our library uses Libby, I have not yet found one that uses Hoopla, but have been researching for an out of state paid one. I grab KU when they offer the 3 months for 99 cent deal and listen to books I keep on a growing wishlist. I also have Audible. I have the package that lets me get 2 audibles for less than $9 each a month. So not bad.

I tried to do the 3 month for 99 cent deal, and I couldn’t because I had been a member within the last three months so I just bought the year. I have not seen that audible deal, that is better than what I can get. I will have to watch for it.

So glad I saw this post Carla! I am listening to The Seven or Eight Lives of Stella Fortuna on Hoopla now and enjoying it (a long one). I like to listen in the car, grocery shopping, and also doing house chores. I wonder if my Library also has Overdrive? I’ll check into that and I had NO idea about the KU program which sounds wonderful. I also have Audible, but its expensive for only one book per month!

I gave up my audible, but might renew it if a good offer comes up. I am amazed how many different books I can get between Overdrive and Hoopla. Happy listening Holly.

Carla, I’ve taken your words to heart and requested several books from my library (overdrive). I recently got the new C J Tudor book with every intention to listen when I exercise and/or working in one of my gardens. HOWEVER…I can’t seem to remember my cell phone when I go outside. Must be that senior moment type thing.

I know the feeling, I did that all the time when I first started, now I have it all the time. My problem now is the battery dying on me. 😂😂

Informative post, Carla! I am really jealous you get to use Overdrive! Here in Japan, not many people read English books and there’s hardly any libraries affiliate with Overdrive! So Audible and Scribd are my options…

That’s too bad, the cost is obviously more for you.

Yes, unfortunately. But it’s no wonder – not many Japanese are fluent in English, so fewer people read English books to begin with lol

Hey, Noriko, just wanted to say hi as I thought of the two young ladies I helped with their conversational English when my (Navy) hubby was assigned to a base in Japan. We bumbled into each other one day. One stayed visited me weekly the whole time I was there and eventually went on to England to write there. Her name is Akemi Seki. It’s been over 50 years, but I still think of her and wonder how she is doing.

Ahh, that’s beautiful. It’s sweet of you to still remember her and wonder how she’s been doing even after 50 years!

I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and everything I listen to comes from OverDrive and Kindle Unlimited. Two great sources! 💜
