4 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is the first book I have read in the Pecan Bayou series, but I will try and go back and read the others. I enjoyed meeting Betsy, the “Happy Hinter” and her family and friends living in Pecan Bayou. Betsy makes a great protagonist as she is smart, works for the newspaper and has the trust of others in the community. She is also pretty good at schmoozing others. When Betsy’s Aunt Maggie accidentally shoots and kills Joe, the choir director and retired mail carrier, Betsy is sure that someone else fired the bullet that actually hit Joe. Maggie is positive that she shot her gun up in the air, not at the man who she was sure was the Christmas Creeper, not Joe. If Maggie didn’t kill him, who did?

Betsy is the daughter of the Police Chief and often interferes with his cases. She has some good instincts and is a bit nosy as well. Her blended family adds to the story with their antics, emotions and worry for Betsy. I liked that Betsy had a cousin with Down’s Syndrome and he was a regular part of the town and the story. Danny was written with care, and obviously the author has knowledge of what a person living with Down’s Syndrome is like as well as what and how the family deal with the various situations that may arise. Danny was a very endearing character. The town is close knit and all know one another well. I love the competition between these friends whether it is for the solo at the Christmas program or who has the best decorations for Christmas. I would love to have seen the “Hair Display” done by Ruby, the owner of the local salon. The town puts on a good old small-town Christmas complete with Christmas carols, over the top light displays, delicious food, and loving friends.

The mystery of who killed Joe seemed to take a bit of a backseat as the town dealt with a rash of burglaries, a cache of stolen mail in the dead man’s garage, counterfeit money, a couple of different scammers, and the Christmas Celebration but Teresa Trent did a great job pulling all these storylines together at the end. This story has just enough mystery, humour and family drama to make it a fun Christmas read. I received a copy of this book for a Book Tour that I requested to join. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
